About Bruce Keyes
My photography presents the viewer with an engaging and somewhat unexpected interpretation of the world. I draw from over 30 years of experience with photographic processes combined with a cutting edge digital workflow to create images that celebrate the traditional aspects of photography, as well as the limitless horizons presented by current technology. It is this merging of the past and present, and expectations founded on an awareness of creative capabilities bound only by my imagination that fuels my passion.
I apply a full range of techniques to a diverse range of subjects. Those of the documentary genre are often rendered in full tone black and white. "Spirit of New Orleans" documents my three decade odyssey through the streets of New Orleans, a project illustrating the ethereal spirit of its people, the soul of this great city. "Faces of the Villages", a series of portraits portraying people inhabiting tiny villages around Saltillo, Mexico are presented as sepia toned prints. Both series are representative of traditional photographic processes.
Other works are non-representational or abstract, the products of varied formal strategies and experimentation with digital capabilities. These abstractions might employ selective use of color within a monochromatic context, the isolation of specific shapes contributing to a more complicated structure, alteration of color, perspective and surface or be complex multi image compositions. This area of work contrasts with the archival, literal aspect of the documentary genre and utilizes computer based technology to create work that is more interpretative and not as quickly classified. This genre might be seen as a mixed metaphor, utilizing the advantages of the lens as the instrument of capture with the incorporation of techniques traditionally applied by other mediums such as painting. The evolution of photography to a new, more expressive and personal medium presents itself within this new landscape. It is in this sphere, I apply methodology to the quest of creating work not merely mirroring our environment, but expressing my unique vision of it. Whether representational or abstract, design and emotional impact are foundational concerns.
Commissions of individual works or complete portfolios are negotiable on a per project basis, and can be offered as monographs for the most discriminating collector, while selections from limited editions are also available. My images are presented as archival inkjet prints on a range of watercolor papers and canvases, chosen both for image permanence as well as their subjective rendering of a particular photograph. Whether creating work for installation in residential, corporate or gallery settings, utmost consideration is taken to ensure harmony between the art and the space.
